The Wide World of Sports
Basically professional sports have been slowly losing appeal to me over the years. At this point, I am quite certain that none exists. I cannot remember the last time I watched an entire professional basketball or football game. I think it has been at least 3 or 4 years. I think I caught a game or two of the baseball playoffs last year, but only because that is what the " house " was watching.
I have been trying to figure out why sports, specifically professional sports have ceased to interest me. I don't think I can pinpoint the reason if I had to pick one. However, I will make an attempt to explain it, as much to myself , if for no other reason. One issue, I think has to be the money. I find it impossible for me to relate to the emotion shown by players of professional sports. I am even further put out anytime there is any degree of whining or moping about a loss. I don't understand. I am supposed to watch this, and then somehow feel connected to what is going on enough to feel sorry for someone who makes 10 million dollars a year? It just seems too far-fetched and impossible. I just can't make myself care with regards to that.
I can't force myself to care who wins or loses a respective game. Perhaps this would be different if I had grown up with "a team" or something like that, and could associate that team with various times in my life, but we moved around a bit, and my dad never had " a team" but would only watch if a game was on and he didn't have any work to do, which was only a moderate amount of the time. I don't know, maybe not having "a team" makes it hard for me to care. I just can't understand why I should sit in front of a television for 3-4 hours watching a game, when I could care less who wins.
I guess that is last reason I can come up with is that I just flat out don't care who wins or who does what, or who gets the mvp, or scores "x" amount of points, or hits "x" amount of home runs. It doesn't matter to me, and doesn't change anything in my day to day life.
I don't know why amateur sports still hold so much appeal, I guess it is the whole purity thing, however, even amateur sports don't entertain me the way they once did. I can still enjoy watching a game with friends, but have found that I really enjoy hanging out with friends more than I care about the actual game.
I guess I could go on about all the other reasons that I just don't care about professional sports anymore. But I feel like they will all somehow be tied into the ones I have already given.

Fighting the Good Fight
Those of you who know me and stay in touch with me will read this with an air of familiarity. Those that don't, this will come as not wholly a surprise, if we have at least had a few conversations. I decided some while back that I was starting a crusade against commercialism in its entirety. I guess it all started about the time that I was moving from TEXAS to missouri after I finished up at school. As I entered into adulthood, there were many new responsibilities, educational opportunities, and a lot of driving. Things like buying a house, finding a downpayment for said house, insurance of all kinds (disability, life, auto, homeowner's, prostate, nuclear attack, transmogrification). I bought a decent house in missouri, a nice little spread, 1600 sq ft, right on the edge of town. The house is nice, and old. It was built in 1982, and had not been updated since then.
Immediately, everyone had all these ideas of how to "fix up" the house, all of which involve money in varying amounts. I am all for a little dressing things up, and spent a little money on paint, and installed some light fixtures and ceiling fans. What I have found, is that is not enough for the average person anymore, as I will explain a little more later, but for now, another anecdotal story.
I recently got engaged, for those that don't know. I understand that historically a wedding and engagement ring are methodologies to encourage people to spend lavishly. However, this didn't soften the blows or rancid taste left in my mouth from dealing with people about this.
First the engagement ring. I did a lot of research about this. In doing so, I visited several jewlery stores in both missouri and oklahoma city. I realize the nature of sales is to encourage people to spend more money, especially if one gets paid based on percentages. What I cannot, and will not allow, is for people to try to sell me something and somehow attmept to connect it to my emotions, self-worth, respect, etc, etc. I ran into this alot when looking at engagement rings. Here are some of the phrases I encountered and some of my responses....
" You can't put a price on love".....ME : " I am not buying love, I think that is illegal in oklahoma, I am buying a diamond"
"This is the best way to show her you love her"
" Remember, she will wear this forever"
And my personal favorite " Any girl likes a bigger diamond, I know I do" .....ME: " When I decide to ask you to marry me, I will keep that in mind. "
Seriously, How much I care for my fiance is determined by how big a diamond I buy, that is what everyone is telling me? I meditated on this and it annoyed me. So I decided, I would only spend a certain amount, and refused to go over that, no matter that I could afford to easily go over that, because the whole scenario kept putting me off.
The beautiful and intelligent lady friend, now fiance-friend I suppose, has already encountered the same thing in looking at wedding details. Typical sales pitches are all the same as above in some form or fashion. All of them attempt to tie in a persons self-worth and respect with how much money they spend, how nice the flowers are, how nice the invitations are, what designer made the dress, where the reception is at, how big and beautiful the cake is, and for those of you who have been married, the list goes on and on. Once again, I have no problem with comforts, amenities, elegance and the like. However, I simply cannot tolerate when material possessions, ideas, events are somehow tied to my personal value and importance. Frankly, I feel both sad and amused by people who fall for this.
Understanably, the wedding business is mostly predicated on engaging people's emotions to get them to spend more money, and more than likely was one of the first business models to do so, as it is a big deal, and carries a significant amount of importance. The concerning aspect, and the reason for my battle against commercialism, is that this has simply spilled over into every facet of life for a large percentage of the population. You have to have a new car, a new phone, new furiture, new appliances, new clothes, new shoes, and on and on. I don't have an aversion to new things, however, I am of the opinion that I buy something new when I need it, not because some commercial or person tells me I need it. The disconcerting part of the trend is how a seemingly increasing number of people of all walks of life equate the newest and nicest thing with the value of another person. I just don't understand it. I still have shirts I wore in high school, and see no use in giving up on a garment, just because it is old. (Coincidentally, I can no longer fit in the jeans I wore in high school, or would wear them as well).
The fiance-friends contention is " Well, you buy a lot of hunting a fishing stuff" This is true, I do. I also use all those things. I dont' own one piece of hunting or fishing clothing or equipment that has not been used. Furthermore, I don't buy the top of the line, high dollar, most expensive equipment.
As a byproduct of this crusade, I have become somewhat of a minimalist. I try to buy as little as I can, and limit what I buy to what I need. This is the reason I have two empty bedrooms in my house with no furniture. I have no need for more furniture, I don't really need all of it that I have for that matter. This is the reason I have all used and or garage sell furniture, with the exception of my mattress. This is the reason I rarely buy new clothes. This is the reason my TV is from 1992. None of these things say anything about my personal value, unless you believe everything you hear and see in the media and from those annoying friends who are all about material things.
Lastly, because of these things, we have decided to get married in Mexico, for that reason, and the reason that is will be a blast.

What will they think of next?
Patient : " I haven't been able to get a job for the last year, because my teeth have been hurting"
I sat there with a completely dumbfounded look on my face, and tried not to laugh, or yell, or some combination of the two. I found myself wondering what kind of excuses it is apparently acceptable to use for not being an adult these days......so I came up with a few.
" I haven't been able to get a job for the last year, because sometimes I have to pee during the day"
" I haven't been able to get a job for the last year, because my girlfriend has to use the car sometimes during the week to get her nails done."
" I haven't been able to get a job for the last year, because if I do, I won't be able to get my welfare check"
" I haven't been able to get a job for the last year, because my right foot is a little bigger than my left"
" I haven't been able to get a job for the last year, because I like to eat peanut brittle"
" I havne't been able to get a job for the last year, becuase sometimes I pretend like I am Viking and it scares the people I work with."
" I haven't been able to get a job for the last year, because my great grandfather was a Comanche."
" I haven't been able to get a job for the last year, because I was on a roller coaster 274 days"
"I haven't been able to get a job for the last year, because I am being targeted by the government"
" I haven't been able to get a job for the last year, because my hair is sometimes tangled up when I wake up"
That is all I have for now...I will try to come up with some other ridiculous lists, because I don't have to think very hard to do that, which consequently, has caused me to not be able to get a job for the last year.

Hmmmm
I love the social security tax, and watching the money go out of my check every month. It is good to know that there is not even a small chance of ever seeing that again if things continue as they are. But forget about me and my self-pity, what about those that have been paying the tx for 15 or 20 years already, they probably won't ever see any of that money again either. I just don't understand it.
The solution is easy, although will never actually happen. The federal budget has to be balanced, meaning a budget should not be able to be put into effect until every dollar is accounted for, end of story. Like I said, would never happen, there is no authority to enforce this, probably not the manpower either. However, Without this, what does is matter if taxes are 5% or 55%. It doesn't. The point of taxation is to fund the government.....and people think this will all be better by putting more money in the american taxpayer population: not even close. Not to mention, that we still regularly spend more than is taken in like some wino that won the lottery.

I Was Wrong
Turns out I did have a kid. I haven't seen him in 3 or 4 years, so unfortunately I don't have any of the baby pictures that are so popular on the internet these days. However, I do have the most recent pic......
His name is Diesel McConkey Rose...As you can see, we have very similar features. We have almost the same hair and eyes. It also appears we have a similar gut. I don't know when he picked up smoking honestly...you turn your back for one minute...and all of the sudden you kid is a smoker.
Well, If you got'em, then smoke'em I guess is how the saying goes.
In other news,
I was in Texas this past weekend to do some pheasant and duck hunting. The duck hunting wasn't too great, basically the most exciting thing that happened was me falling down in the mud and getting my pants soaked and very muddy. We did kill some pheasant, which was awesome. Also very nice to see some of my good friends that I don't get to see that often anymore these days. I very much enjoy Texas when I get to visit. I like where I am, but look forward to moving back to the Lone Star State again someday, and flying my Texas flag the same height as the American one.
The last leg of the trip was me flying out of Dallas to Tulsa, and then to make the 3.5 hour drive home, but, flight got delayed, didn't get to my truck in Tulsa until 10:15, after scraping 1/2 inch of ice off of my windows, and then drove about 5 hours home due to the inclement weather. So, got home at 3 am, and up at 6:45 am to head to work...but that is just how I roll. All in all, the late night drive was worth it for the great weekend I had.
By the way Kelby, I love the saying " It is what it is" I don't see how you could take offense to this one, I say it all the time, "To each his own" I guess.

A Simple Plan
I think you officially, at least in part, become old when you start saying things like "those kids need to slow down, this highway isn't a race track." I can remember the first time my dad said something along those lines about the road in front of our house.
Most kids are not drag racing down the highway at 189 MPH. Odds are, they just want to open up all four cylinders on their 1986 4 door Ford Tempo and see if when they jam it into 5th, and accelerate up to 88 MPH, if they flash, smoke, and transport back to 1955.
Back to what I was saying. Now, we all have no doubt "slammed on the brakes" when we see a police car sitting on the side of the road or roll by us in the other lane. I have to say I am guilty of this if I am in fact speeding. However, the person that hits their brakes everytime they see a cop car, whether they are speeding or not, should no longer be allowed to drive. Why??!!! Would you hit the brakes if you are driving the speed limit??!! I have never understood this. But, I digress, which reminds me of a time.....
So, upon driving home the other day, I was doing a little speeding, and saw a cop car and of course hit my brakes to lower my speed to a more acceptable level. Upon approaching the car, I realized it was not a police car, but a 80+ year old man and his wife driving a white Crown Victoria. To add to the list of things I do no understand...why do so many old people drive a Crown Victoria? Was there some commercial in 1958 that held the Crown up as the one deciding factor to know if you had a successful career?
Cheesy TV Voice : " You have had a great career, now you are retired...what comes next?.... show everyone how much your hard work paid off by redefining your new life in the stylish luxury of a Ford Crown Victoria...the Crown Jewel of the the Ford Motor Fleet. "
Now I have nothing against this vehicle...just can't understand the fascination of them with the geriatric crowd.
Point being....if every old person would buy a Crown Vic (street name), We wouldn't even need highway patrolmen anymore to give speeding tickets, because the highways would be a cacophony of screeching tires and worn brakes due to everyone slamming their brakes everytime " Grandpa Law" meandered by at a cool 52 MPH...which from my observation, must be the top speed of a stock Crown Vic.

Greetings from the center of the universe
Things have been busy for me, but I will try to fill everyone in on what has been going on. Roughly 3 weeks ago, I went to Colorado for 6 days to elk hunt with my dad and two of his friends. The trip was great, however, the weather did not cooperate and we only got two days of hunting in. We got about 26 inches of snow in 24hrs, which was a first for a flatlander like me. I will post pics at some point, but don't have them off my camera as of now.
The following weekend, I went to see Mofro at George's Majestic in Fayetteville, Ark. It was an awesome show...JJ can bring it like nobody's business, that is for sure. Me and the "special lady friend" went with some friends of mine from school...it was a great time. A couple of guys in the bar weren't wearing any shoes or socks for that matter.
The next weekend I went to the OSU/UT football game in Stillwater, OK. Props to the "special lady friend" for parking in the "permit only" area and not getting a ticket. It was a great game, Texas spotted OSU a few touchdowns, then snatched the life out of the whole stadium in the fourth quarter. Great time. Thanks again to Dr. B for the free tix, look forward to seeing you in Austin in the near future. Hope the wife and kids are doing well.
This past weekend was spent deer hunting here in Missouri. Hunted all day saturday and half sunday. Saw one doe on sunday after she almost stepped on me, so no shots were fired...but if I can wrap it up quick enough here, I may get to do some more hunting this afternoon.
Turns out all the kids I have pictures of really aren't my kids....guess I can stop all those child support payments now, which is a huge plus.
Jelby,
I am loving the new blog. It has inspired me for yet another foray into the cyberworld, and will look to be updating my blog a little more frequently these days.
Actual conversation in my office last week....
Me : " Yes ma'am, we do have a sliding fee here, you just need to bring in a w-2 to show income from last year."
Her: " I haven't had a W-2 in years, I just got out of prison"
This is my life.

Babies are falling from the sky
Interesting note I found out today. Apparently, in the state of Arkansas, your vehicle does not have to pass any kind of inspection, if it will go down the road, then that is all that matters. I havne't had the chance to confirm or deny this, but anyone with any info, please step forward, and if this is really the case, all I can say is...that is fantastic.
Saw an old lady today, not only was she wearing a fanny pack, but it appeared to be packed chock full o' stuff, so I found myself wondering what sort of things could be in there...I came up with a few ideas...
Cocaine
AED
Another fanny pack
Biscuits
Cigarettes ( Good chance of that)
Baby ( I will check her blog to see if there is any pictures)
Dinosaur Eggs
Hoffa
Cold Cuts
Vicks Vapor Rub
Cough Drops
Sadly, this is all I got for now...stay tuned for baby pictures

Too Much Mass
I am not talking about Catholic religious functions, at least not yet. I am referring to a situation I ran into in the store about two weeks ago. I was in the process of purchasing the necessary supplies to do a little grilling. One item on the menu was beer can chicken. I was about to traverse the airplane hangar sized store to checkout, when I realized that I had bottles of beer as opposed to cans. No big deal right? Wrong. I wanted a six pack of beer, nothing fancy, to cook a chicken with. However, apparently, you can only buy six packs of tallboys nowadays, because 6-12oz cans just didn't cut it....those extra 24 oz make all the difference. You have to buy a twelve pack to get the 12oz cans. I think this is a travesty. What is next, you can only buy 50 gallons of gas at a time, you have to buy 2 gallons of milk at once, you have to order more than one bride from Russia. I just don't have the stomach for that kind of overkill. If you need to reach me, I will be talking on my cellphone/two-way/mp3 player/camera/plutonic laser/wallet/kitchen knife.

Question of the Day
"Don't You Go Back To Him He's A Wifebeater"
Today's topic is the wife-beater....the shirt, not anyone you know per se. The wife-beater is as enigmatic as it is functional. It some cases it seems the only choice of attire, and in others, an anathema. Who wears a wife-beater you might ask? The answer is simple: everyone. Men, women, young, old, slim, not so slim. How can something so simple, be so utilized? Well, sadly, I have no answer, what I have compiled is a list of the people that I have seen wearing a wife-beater in my lifetime. Some will be surprising, some not so....
People who beat their wife
Every white guy with a mullet on COPS, sometimes accompanied by cut-off jean shorts
Gothics - sometimes sporting the black wife-beater, so you know they are serious about Magic The Gathering
High School/College guys -the perfect way to show off all those hours in the gym. This is okay, I can handle this look, used to sport it myself, but the combo of the wife-beater with the hat with the bill to the side is almost too much. I should definitely find a way to inconspicuously sterilize those people, because we don't need more. And make more hats where the bill is straight
Old Men - old men always wear these as undershirts, which I don't completely get. I don't know what is gained from this. I really don't know what is gained from it when you tuck the wife-beater into the underwear, if someone can please explain what purpose this serves, please let me know
The punk chick who wears pink hair, 10 pound braclets, has 18 piercings, and doesn't care about anything, not even cool stuff.
People who beat their wife
Where does that leave us, and what is a wife-beater really for, I don't know. I wish I did. If anyone has any insight as to the origins/purpose of this seemingly widespread and well-loved clothing article, please let me know.

The Cool Of Functional
1. Undershirts are completely abandoned, any amount of chest hair show-thru or armpit sweat no longer is any concern.
2. Hair, or what is left of it, is not fixed, but combed, and any shape that results is acceptable, becuase looking in mirrors becomes loathesome and unnecessary.
3. Belts are replaced by suspenders
4. Suspenders are replaced by rainbow colored or bright red suspenders.
5. The daily attire consists of one piece short sleeve dickies coveralls, preferably in some shade of blue, and with a low neck for optimal breathability and chest hair sportage.
6. Shoes that must be tied are replaced by a combination of work boots ( to be worn for any occasion) or velcro shoes.
7. The ultimate, is when pockets and wallets are no longer enough, the man begins to sport a fanny pack, and this is the pinnacle of replacing cool points for being functional.
8. I have never seen it, but two fanny packs would be some level of functional that seems impossible, but I have complete confidence that the first man to pull this off, will take over the world, and promptly deposit said world in his fanny pack.

What a Long Strange Trip Its Been
School ended for another year, and once again the genteelmen at 6118 hosted a modest get together. There were a couple of pinatas and some stone casts even managed to get stuck in a block of ice that had become frozen with a perfect trough in the middle of it for pouring beverages in. The shin-dig was a big hit, although we got moved inside around midnight, and it was extremely hot in the house. The night was full of many highlights, with my favorite being some guy that I didn't know, walking around and eating some 14 month old ice cream from our freezer straight out of the tub...fantastic. All in all, school is school, and I was just happy for a little respite.
I then went that next weekend to Doodle's wedding, all in all it was a great time, of seeing some old friends and making some new ones. However, it did become apparent to me, that I do find it somewhat discourteous to have a wedding transpire in any proximity to a usual mealtime...but hey, not about me. Saturday night after the wedding was a good time, and myself, the Delicious, Truck and some others went to the historic Blaine's pub in San Angelo. The band was average, but the fun started when we made a point to shoe polish doodle's ride convieniently located at the comfort suites on the way home. Truck and the Delicious set it off. There were several other "wedding cars" there, and someone had made sure and tipped the cops off, that many of the cars were ridin durty....and that one person even had the gall to drive a fake lincoln.....and the journey continued on from there.
I spent the next three weeks in Belcourt North Dakota, staying at the Skydancer Hotel and Casino, and working at the hospital in Belcourt, North Dakota. It was a great time, and I really enjoyed working there. Furthermore, staying at a casino was great as well, I got in a fairly good routine of going to dinner, and then going to play some blackjack. My buddy B who was with me, did win a friday night blackjack tournament, which netted him 300 dollars and an awesome Skydancer leather coat complete with intricately stitched on casino paraphanelia. So, many thanks to the people of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation. Also, we had a chance to visit the International Peace Gardens and did visit the Geographical Center of North America..probably the first Texans ever to do so. On the way home, we detoured over to see Mt. Rushmore, Black Hilll Nat'l Forest, Crazy Horse Monument, and the Badlands Nat'l Park, and Deadwood, South Dakota....all were fantastic, but I do believe that the Badlands were indeed my favorite....very nice....here are a few of the pics.

I followed the three weeks in North Dakota with two in Laredo, Texas...quite a contrast. Laredo wasn't bad, but I don't care if I ever go back there again, maybe there will be more on that topic later, but I doubt it, because I don't care enough.
Lastly, I am now back in San Antonio and starting my three weeks of summer vacation. I am stoked about that, and look to resume a more frequent blog posting schedule.
Thanks and good night,
The Steak Abides
